How do I know the BOM (Bill of Material)?
If you don’t have all the BOM details from your supplier, don’t worry, there are several ways to make a good estimation. The goal is to get as close as possible with the information available, so you can start your analysis and refine it later.
1. Check existing information
-
Look for ingredient lists, specifications, or labels provided by the supplier or printed on the packaging.
-
Sometimes, the product datasheet or technical documentation includes useful clues about the materials or components used.
2. Ask your supplier
-
Contact the supplier directly to request missing BOM details.
-
Even if they can’t share exact formulations, see if they can share general information such as the high-over composition or weight.
3. Make your best estimate
-
Use your own knowledge or similar products as a reference.
-
Try to identify the main components and approximate their proportions (for example: 70% steel, 20% plastic, 10% rubber). You are then able to recalculate them into weights.
4. Use AI assistance
-
You can use an AI tool to help estimate the BOM if you lack data.
-
Upload a photo, share a link, or describe the product in detail.
-
The AI can help estimate:
-
The weight of one product
-
The weight ratios of each commodity or material
-
Possible composition breakdowns based on product characteristics
-
Even a first estimation is a valuable starting point. It helps you challenge the supplier and refine the details together by asking targeted questions.
