Why is a resource not available for every country or region?

WTP can only show a price that someone collects and publishes. For many resources, that only happens in a few countries. So a resource you need can be missing for your country, while it is available for another one.

Why a country has no price
  • Indices need a statistics office. Wage and labor cost indices come from national banks or statistics offices. Countries with a small government or a limited budget often do not collect or share them.
  • Some figures are held back. Governments sometimes keep economic data private on purpose, or publish it with a delay.
  • A commodity needs a real market. A price only exists where a material is produced or traded in large volumes. Where little is traded, there is no market price to follow.
        Where to look instead

Look at the country where the material is produced most. That is where the market is, so that is where a price is most likely to be published. Use it as a guide for the price level elsewhere.

There are exceptions. A niche product can still have a well-followed price when it gets a lot of attention from abroad. Matcha and other tea from Japan is an example.

        Tip:

        • No price for your country? Use the main producing country as a reference, and check that the specification matches what you buy.
